Salary of Chief Justice of India as per the 7th pay commission
The salary of chief Justice of India (CJI) is 2,80,000 INR per month. The amount of pension received by the CJI is 16,80,000 INR per annum along with Dearness Relief. The CJI receives a gratuity of 20,00,000 INR.
- According to the Department of Justice- Government of India “Salaries, gratuity, pension, allowances etc. in respect of Judges of the Supreme Court are governed by the Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Act, 1958.
- Salaries etc. of Judges of High Courts are governed by High Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Act, 1954. An amendment in the Acts is required whenever there is any proposal for revision of salaries/pension gratuity, allowances etc. in respect of Judges of Supreme Court and High Courts”.
Apart form Salary Perks & Allowances received by CJI
Besides the salary received by the CJI, they also get to enjoy several perks and allowances. As per the latest update, The CJI of India receives a furnishing allowance is 10,00,000 INR. They also receive HRA- House Rent Allowance which is 24% of their basic salary. At times, HRA might depend on factors such as location and other situational factors. The CJI also receives a sumptuary allowance every month- 45,000 INR per month. The HRA received CJI is 30% of basic salary and DA is 50% according to Cabinet Ministry of India.

Who is the CJI?
The CJI is the highest ranking officer of the Indian Judiciary and the chief judge presiding over the Supreme Court of India. The Constitution of India grants power to the President of India to appoint the chief justice, as recommended by outgoing chief justice in consultation with other judges as envisaged in Article 124 of Indian Constitution, who will serve until they reach the age of sixty-five or are removed by the constitutional process of impeachment. As head of the Supreme Court, the chief justice is responsible for the allocation of cases and appointment of constitutional benches which deal with important matters of law. In accordance with Article 145 of Indian Constitution of India and the Supreme Court Rules of Procedure of 1966, the chief justice allocates all work to the other judges who are bound to refer the matter back to them (for re-allocation) in any case where they require it to be looked into by a larger bench of more judges.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CJI
- The Chief Justice of India is responsible for allocating the work to all the other judges. These judges are expected to submit and return the completed task to the CJI whatever the situation might be in order for the task to be reviewed and rechecked by a bench consisting more judges
- The Chief Justice of India is responsible for administering and regulating the oath of office to the president. However, in his absence this is carried out by the senior most judge of the supreme court who is available

- The Chief Justice of India is the one who decides on the Supreme Court’s interpretation if there is any doubt regarding a constitutional clause.

Removal of the CJI
A Judge of the Supreme Court shall not be removed from his office except by an order of the President passed after an address by each House of Parliament supported by a majority of the total membership of that House and by a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members of that House present and voting has been presented to the President in the same session for such removal on the ground of proved misbehavior or incapacity.
